The Electoral College was designed to insure ALL states would have proportional representation in selecting the president. Without the Electoral College, you would have candidates concentrate their efforts in the most populated areas.
On the surface, it would appear a popular vote would be the fairest system. Unfortunately, it opens too many possibilities for abuse of the election process.
While, in principle, you are correct that the end result seems to always come down to a few swing states, The swing states do change from one election cycle to another. This particular year, the emphasis is on the west. The southern states has been all republican for years and are now swinging to democratic and the north central states are shifting as well. We saw in the primaries that there were more states which influenced the nomination process than ever before and, it appears, the same will be true with the general election.
The wisdom of our founding fathers has proved time and time again. I continue to have faith in that wisdom.
